Dale Bachwich, MD CMO

Dale Bachwich, MD is co-founder of Dark Canyon Laboratories, serves as Chief Medical Officer, and practiced gastroenterology for over 30 years. He is a founding member of The Endoscopy Center, Inc., an ASGE-recognized endoscopy unit in Rapid City, and has served as its president and medical director.  He has served as Chief of Staff as well as Board Member at Monument Health Rapid City Hospital.  Dr. Bachwich has been a member of the South Dakota Colorectal Cancer Council.  Prior to his work in South Dakota, Dr. Bachwich was Instructor in Medicine in the Gastrointestinal Unit at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.  Dr. Bachwich received his Undergraduate and Medical degrees from the University of Michigan, where he completed his Internal Medicine training and completed his first of two GI fellowships.  He completed his second GI fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

Vera Kowal, MD CEO

Vera Kowal, MD is co-founder of Dark Canyon Laboratories and serves as Chief Executive Officer.  She was the founder of the Black Hills LASIK Center, a laser vision correction center and clinical research site.  Prior to the founding of the Black Hills LASIK Center, Dr. Kowal served as Director of Refractive Surgery at the Black Hills Regional Eye Institute, a non-profit ophthalmic referral center.  She also served as Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery, at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine, and as President of the South Dakota Academy of Ophthalmology.  Prior to her work in South Dakota, Dr. Kowal was Instructor in Ophthalmology at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and staff physician at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia.  Dr. Kowal received her Undergraduate and Medical degrees from the University of Michigan, where she completed an Internal Medicine internship. She completed her residency training at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston.  She also completed a fellowship in Cornea and External Diseases at Wills Eye Hospital.
